Well, crap...
Updated my source to the latest version and now black screen then PSP shuts itself off. Since I can't use the built version due to the 1.5 plugin not liking the fw check (and no way to bypass) and that no one uses VC90 (2k8) to build really much less the newer version of the sdk, I guess I'm done playing n64 on the psp... ah well, on to something else.
Knew I should have backed up before installing this one.
EDIT: tested a bit and it looks to be the new gButtons code. Getting really goofy results (won't even register key press to exit on a bad fw check). sigh, I'm not taking that much time to merge every time.

I highly recommend you to downgrade to minpspw 0.95 and not use VC to compile, the project hasn't been updated over a year (none of the active devs use it, except Kreationz but he hasn't update it) You could update it yourself and summit a patch to update it if you want. As for the FW check, is just 2 lines of code to allow skipping it, I'll add it in my next commit. What do you mean the key presses aren't working? you mean the exit key (home) or all the keys(X,[].etc)

After much deleting, downloading a version, testing and failing, I kept moving back versions and I did get 595 to work. I do believe 596 is the point it stops. I would have to verify (since at the point I was jumping back multiple versions to speed the process up) but postive it is between 596 and 600. And by no buttons, I literally mean no buttons. If I run the compiled 604 (or my modded build), it comes to the failed version check and you can bang on any or all keys to your hearts content. The only option is to hold the power button till it does a forced shut down. Bypassing the screen entirely will just give a black screen then after a few seconds the system shuts down. Oddly, the lock up seems to be inside System_Init(). For the VS support, the only thing you have to do is change the include path to where you install the sdk. The main issue I keep facing is that I run a newer version of the sdk than you are so I have to alter R4300.cpp and audiohle.h to compile. Fortunately, they don't change much. If you alter the version check to allow it to be skipped (I've used triangle), then I won't need to edit main.cpp anymore either, which will be nice.

Err...Paper mario has worked since halfway up to beta 2, lol. Try the (E) version on the latest alpha revision. The flicker is also gone and the E version is faster than the U. Also according to salvy audio is good with audio rate match.
